Our Co-Creators

SHAPE-SEA is made possible through the dedication and collaboration of key partner organizations that share a common vision for a Southeast Asia where human rights and peace are upheld and protected. Together, our co-creators provide the institutional, academic, and financial foundations that empower the program to build regional research capacity, strengthen human rights education, and amplify the voices of communities across the region.

ASEAN University Network-Human Rights Network

AUN-HRE is one of the two co-founding partners of SHAPE-SEA, a joint program established out of a desire by Southeast Asian human rights and peace scholars to develop and strengthen the capacities and knowledge of fellow academics working in the region. Through this partnership, AUN-HRE helps anchor SHAPE-SEA's work within the broader network of ASEAN universities, promoting the integration of human rights and peace education across member institutions.

Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol Unviersity

The IHRP at Mahidol University serves as the host institution of SHAPE-SEA. The SHAPE-SEA Secretariat is based at the IHRP's Panyaphiphat Building on the Mahidol University campus in Salaya, Thailand. As the institutional home of the program, IHRP provides the administrative, academic, and operational backbone that enables SHAPE-SEA to carry out its regional research, capacity-building, and outreach activities

South East Asian Human Rights Studies Network

SEAHRN is the second co-founding partner of SHAPE-SEA, making it a joint program alongside AUN-HRE. SEAHRN has co-organized international conferences on Human Rights and Peace in Southeast Asia together with SHAPE-SEA, including events in Bangkok in 2016 and Manila in 2018. SEAHRN brings together scholars and practitioners from across the region, strengthening SHAPE-SEA's reach and collaborative research ecosystem.

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

SIDA is the primary funder of SHAPE-SEA, supporting the program's mission to empower universities to advance a culture of human rights, peace, and democracy across Southeast Asia through evidence-based research and regional cooperation. Sida's support has carried the program through multiple phases, with Phase 2 building upon results achieved during Phase 1 (2015–2021), and with a special focus on countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and East Timor, where research capacity for peace and human rights studies requires further development.

Our Milestones

As SHAPE-SEA marks its 11th year, we extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals, institutions, and communities who have shaped this journey. What began in 2015 as a shared vision among human rights and peace scholar-practitioners has evolved into a regional community grounded in trust, collaboration, and a commitment to dignity, justice, and social transformation. We are sincerely grateful to the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for its sustained support, and to the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), Mahidol University, for hosting SHAPE-SEA and providing the intellectual and institutional home that has anchored the programme for over a decade. We also thank our founding networks — AUN-HRE and SEAHRN — our Governing Board, civil society partners, and research collaborators whose guidance and engagement have kept SHAPE-SEA regionally grounded and forward-looking. Above all, we thank the scholars, educators, students, fellows, and emerging researchers who have been part of SHAPE-SEA's programmes. Your commitment to justice is at the heart of this work. As we reflect on ten years of collective effort and look ahead, we move forward with humility, hope, and a reaffirmation that SHAPE-SEA's journey has always been — and will continue to be — a shared one.
